About Pizza Pizza (CA)

In early 2019, a Statistics Canada report found that lots of Canadians eat out or order takeout food quite often. In fact, 54% of the people asked by the survey said that they eat out once a week and 39% eat out less than once a week. Americans still eat out more but these are still large numbers.

According to the same survey, there are two common reasons why people dine out: to socialize and for convenience. 52% of the respondents say that they go out to eat to socialize with friends and family while 40% say they dine out because it’s more convenient than preparing food at home. Most meals eaten outside are for dinner but lunch is a very close second.

These numbers feel like they’re from a lifetime ago as things changed drastically nowadays due to the pandemic. As of late, restaurant closures are announced left and right and there’s even a prediction that about 60% of restaurants in Canada will close down within 3 months. If these do not answer the question, then, let’s take a closer look at what’s happening on the ground.

Based on a couple of surveys done by Andie.work and Statistics Canada, there are two major reasons why people are not heading out to eat at restaurants just yet:

Canadians are concerned over contracting the disease from other patrons.

It’s no secret that restaurants are considered as some of the best places for the coronavirus to thrive. They’re often indoors with spaces that have poor ventilation. They can get crowded, even with some distancing precautions put in place. There are also quite a lot of touchpoints that will cause patrons to get in contact with each other.

According to Andie.work’s survey, 32% of Canadians are worried that they’ll get infected through exposure from other restaurant patrons. This and a few other reasons might explain why more than half of the survey’s respondents say that they only eat at home at the moment.

Dining out is one of the first things Canadians decided to cut down during pandemic recovery.

Health concerns are not the only reasons that are keeping lots of folks from dining out as much as they did pre-pandemic. Many have to take pay cuts and lots lost their jobs as a result of the lockdowns. The economic impact of COVID-19 is devastating so it’s not surprising that many choose to cut down their restaurant spending as a part of their financial recovery efforts.

These don’t even have to do with just the costs of dining out. Even with Pizza Pizza menu prices, the chain still suffered from losses during the pandemic. While pizza chains were not hit as hard as other kinds of fast food chains, it’s still a sign that consumers are not going out to eat just yet.
